Supporting researchers in understanding and meeting requirements relating to disclosure, conflict of interest and commitment, cyber and travel security, export control and other concerns relating to improper foreign interference and protecting their important work.
Georgetown researchers advance knowledge and produce important discoveries in an environment that is open and collaborative, working closely with others domestically and around the world. Most Georgetown research collaborations pose little risk, but unauthorized access, theft or misuse of research data, sensitive technologies or intellectual property can have serious consequences. Because of concerns about national security and economic competitiveness, federal rules require that we take steps to safeguard research by implementing a research security program.
The Georgetown research security program focuses on meeting federal and sponsor requirements and protecting our research while encouraging international collaboration in a way that advances discovery and avoids xenophobia, prejudice or discrimination.
Strengthening Collaboration and Trust
Collaboration and trust are critical to strengthening our scientific and academic achievements. Georgetown’s engagement and collaboration with scholars and researchers around the world are vital. Research collaboration is never risk-free, and in the context of research security, it is important that researchers understand:
Risks that can arise from international engagements, collaborations and travel;
Potential conflicts of interest and conflicts of commitment that can arise from formal and informal international affiliations, activities and collaborations;
Required reporting and disclosure obligations; and
University and federal requirements, guidelines, policies and procedures governing international engagement.
This website provides information on the pillars of Georgetown’s research security program and includes guidance from federal agencies. The core components of research security include:
