Frequently Asked Questions

Research security, as defined in National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 (NSPM-33), “is safeguarding the research enterprise against behaviors aimed at misappropriating research and development to the detriment of national or economic security, related violations of research integrity and foreign government interference.”

More broadly, research security is safeguarding and protecting the means, know-how and products of research from misappropriation by malign actors seeking to obtain sensitive data, intellectual property or export-controlled information. Additionally, research security is protecting the safety and security of our research community as they travel and work abroad.

A one-page resource for Georgetown researchers of key things to know and key contacts related to research security is available here.

You can register your upcoming international travel utilizing the following methods:

Covered individuals at Georgetown are required to complete research security training within 12 months prior to applying for new federal funding and annually thereafter. Georgetown researchers who are named senior/key personnel on active federally-funded research projects will be enrolled in the training module automatically in order to complete the training in a timely manner. Refer here for more information on research security training

Yes. While some elements of the research security program are required only for covered individuals involved in federally funded research, such as research security training, all researchers at Georgetown should be informed about research security issues and adhere to university policies and guidance related to safeguarding research. Compliance with export control regulations, for example, is not an obligation limited to researchers who are federally funded.

Researchers are key members of the university’s research security program. All researchers must adhere to university policies and guidance related to safeguarding research.
