Cybersecurity

The security of research information and data, in addition to the systems and technology we use in our work, is an important aspect of Georgetown’s research security program. Georgetown has implemented a number of cybersecurity measures to protect research and expects everyone who is involved in sponsored research to understand requirements, ask questions when necessary and report any concerns about the security of our research promptly.
Georgetown’s cybersecurity structure incorporates elements of the Department of Defense’s Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework. In addition to helping Georgetown meet these federal requirements, researchers should stay up to date on good cyber hygiene practices by reviewing the UISO University Information Security Office (UISO) cyber awareness website, which provides information on topics such as password security, phishing and ransomware, data protection guidelines and more. Researchers, including Principal Investigators (PIs) and other Key Personnel, should also review the Guidelines for the Protection of University Research Data.
The implementation of federal cybersecurity requirements is a shared responsibility between the University Information Security Office, schools and departments that manage research IT systems, and PIs who conduct the sponsored research. PIs who would like a consultation or require particular IT resources for a research project should submit a request through the UIS review portal or contact UISO at security@georgetown.edu. Researchers should be mindful of proposal deadlines and submit requests and inquiries early in the process to ensure adequate time for review and appropriate preparations.
To report known or suspected security incidents, contact the Cyber Incident Response Team (CIRT) at CIRT@georgetown.edu or call 202-687-3031. If the incident includes any immediate physical danger or involves the presence of unknown/unauthorized persons, contact the Georgetown University Police Department immediately at 202-687-4343. If on the Capitol Campus, contact the Capitol Campus Department of Public Safety at 202-662-9325; if off-campus, call 911.
